Reinholtzen 2008
TURNING POINT WINS REINHOLTZEN REGATTAFLEET STARTS THE 2008 SEASON(Tuesday, May 28, 2008) On Saturday, May 24th, for the first time in the 2008 season the Chicago Beneteau 40.7 fleet had their first two race starts at the Reinholtzen Spring Opener Regatta hosted by the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club. Although this regatta does not count in any of the season series, six boats of the fleet showed up at the starting line including Katie Goldman's Rhumb Runner (still bearing her former name, Rumble Fish). Conditions were near perfect for the fleet to meet for the first time with winds of 8-12 knots, north northeast and fairly steady. When asked afterward what memorable experience they had during the day's racing, Scott Reich, Vayu's main trimmer, replied, "Oh definitely the leeward mark rounding in the first race. We weren't in a great position in the fleet. As we came into the mark with everything on the foredeck a little mixed up Boot (Das Boot) tried to get in there but someone on our boat called ‘No room!' and we rounded ahead of them. But in the next instant, as we started upwind, Excalibur, who was just ahead and to leeward of us tacked and called ‘Starboard!!'. We had to crash tack and our pole was still up and now we were in Ex's worst bad air. It was ugly. Somehow we squared away the mess and tacked out of there." At the end of the first race it was Turning Point beating 2nd place Vayu by 22 seconds, and Excalibur in 3rd place, 1 minute 14 seconds behind Vayu. The winner of the second race was Tsunami, 49 seconds ahead of 2nd place Vayu, followed 1 minute 15 seconds later by 3rd place Turning Point. In the end Turning Point and Vayu were tied with 4 points each and Turning Point won the tie-breaker because of their 1st place in the first race.
